Chapter Meeting October 12, 2022 – Open Discussion

About the program

We have not scheduled a presentation for this meeting. We will talk about whatever technical communication topics the people who attend wish to discuss.

A roomful of technical communicators is seldom at a loss for ideas or opinions, and that goes for a Zoom-roomful as well. So join us for a lively and wide-ranging exploration.

Suggested topics for discussion:

  • Is technical communication still what we do? What are the boundaries?
  • What should we be learning to stay relevant?
  • Is it better to be an employee or a contractor these days?
  • Whatever topics you bring to the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Chapter Meeting September 14, 2022 – How Technical Writers Can Earn a Seat At the Table and Take Control of Their Careers in 2023

Speaker: Daniel Codella

About the program

Artificial intelligence. Educated consumers. Chatbots. UX design. These are just a few trends threatening to render the role of the technical writer extinct. To avoid obsolescence, technical writers need to look beyond their traditional duties and start influencing business outcomes. This requires them to get out of their comfort zones and become trusted partners to leaders across their organizations. By aligning their work more closely with business priorities and making friends with influential members of the C-suite, they have the opportunity to earn a coveted “seat at the table.”

You’ll learn:

  • Which skills can make you indispensable to your organization
  • Strategies for building influence
  • How and why to take ownership of business outcomes

About the speaker

Daniel Codella is a marketer, writer, and keynote speaker with a deep interest in data and human nature. His passion is helping organizations across industries improve how they use marketing, data and psychology to drive business outcomes. He currently serves as a Senior Writer at BetterUp, a company focused on accelerating human growth and transformation.

Summer Schmooze at Sam’s BBQ

DATE
Thursday, August 11, 2022, 5:30 PM

LOCATION

Sam’s Barbeque, 1110 South Bascom Avenue, San Jose  (408) 297-9151

Continuing an STC tradition in the South Bay, the STC SF Bay Chapter will host a summer schmooze in the enclosed outside patio area at Sam’s.  You can buy your own alcoholic beverages, and we’ll run a food and soft drink tab to pay for the rest.

As you probably know, the STC SF Bay Chapter combines four former STC chapters: Berkeley, East Bay, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley. We went virtual when the pandemic hit, but now we’re going to see how a few live events go. We’ll soon be announcing another in the Dublin/Pleasanton area.

Feel free to let us know you’re coming (reply to reservations@stc-berkeley.org), but it’s not a requirement. People are busy and often have to decide at the last moment, so if you can make it, just show up.

Online Teaching and Accessibility in a Pandemic

Speaker: Audrey Blumeneau

About the presentation

The COVID-19 Pandemic changed our lives, jobs, and routines in so many ways. In the world of education, teachers moved mountains to pivot from in-classroom instruction to fully online practically overnight. Over the past couple of years, faculty have become quite adept and creative with providing lectures and assessments to an online environment. One of the overarching challenges (among many) was/is ensuring that all content complies with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. I will discuss some of the issues and challenges and how we are working to ensure that all students are provided equal access to learning content.

About the speaker

Audrey Blumeneau, M.Ed., has been teaching digital media and web design in higher education for over 20 years at institutions such as University of California, Santa Cruz Extension, Cabrillo College and at San José City College. She is the Distance Education Coordinator at San José City College working with faculty on online pedagogy, content delivery and accessibility.
